Psalm 2:1-2 — Why do the nations rebel? Why are the countries devising plots that will fail? 2 The kings of the earth form a united front; the rulers collaborate against the Lord and his anointed king (NET)
It's easy to look at the world around us and think, "what is going on with this world!" It's an age old question with a lot of correct answers. Yet at the heart of the problem is us. We, the nations, rage and rebel against the King of Kings. It's our natural tendency, really.
But not only do we rebel, but the elementary principles of the world that we talked about the past two Sundays rebel as well. For a quick reminder, we are told in Ephesians, "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (Eph 6:12). Spiritual warfare is real, and it happens at the largest level and at the smallest level.
Yet as Christians, it is not something that we need to fret about because the King's anointed one has already won! But we do need to be aware that even a defeated foe can still fight. I believe it was a sermon by John Stott, who organized a sermon on Revelation with these for points: 1) God wins, 2) Satan loses, 3) it isn't even close, 4) it is permanent.
Psalm 2 is a messianic psalm that points us to the coming Messiah, the Son of God, who will (and currently does) reign victoriously. So, even in the midst of hardship and frustration, fear and uncertainty, conflict and confusion, take comfort that even though the nations rebel against our God and stand against our Anointed King, He's already won, and He will return, and He is with us even today through His Holy Spirit.
I would encourage to read and meditate on Psalm 2 this week, and feel free to share your takeaways with me this Sunday!
