Church Is A Team Sport

Church Is A Team Sport
“The word of God continued to increase, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.” –Acts 6:7

As I write this article, it is Wednesday morning, June 5, and the church is full of people at work. The construction crew is working hard to finish our new Children’s Ministry Classroom – adding drywall and insulation. The VBS Team is working on crafts and building stage decorations. A church full of people hard at work brings me great joy. Why?

Because ministry is a team sport. Getting the gospel out into the community is a team sport. Church is a team sport. It’s simply too much for any person to do alone – and the more hands on deck, the better. We see this truth demonstrated vividly in Acts 6. As the early church grew, the work of ministry got to be too much for the Apostles to handle on their own. So they brought on a new team of seven men to serve as Deacons. These Deacons took some of the responsibility off of the Apostle’s plate. The early church worked as a team, and Acts 6:7 tells us the result of that teamwork: “The word of God continued to increase, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.”

It’s fun to be on a team isn’t it? Especially a team that is moving towards a shared goal. Especially a team full of people you love and who love you back. That’s what it looks like to be a church on mission. May God continue to use this team that we call CPC to further his mission in this world.

Your Pastor and Friend,
John Knox Foster
