3 Reasons I’m Excited for CPC’s Men’s Bible Study
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” -Proverbs 27:17

Last Sunday we announced the brand new CPC Men’s Bible Study. The study will be held every Friday from 6:30-7:30 AM at the church. Dr. Jim Hurley will be teaching on “The Parables of Christ.” I’m excited for this new study for three reasons:

1) Sharp Men Are Useful to Their Families: Proverbs 27:17 says that “iron sharpens iron as one man sharpens another.” Proverbs assumes that being sharp is good. It assumes that sharpness is a quality to be desired in a man. The dictionary defines sharpness in this way: “having an edge or a point that is able to cut or pierce something.” We don’t normally think of needing to “cut” or “pierce” in our families. But what about those times when your son or daughter is confused by the worldview they’re being taught at school? Sharp men can use their knowledge of Scripture to pierce through the teaching of the world and lead their children to the cross. What about those times when men get caught up in sin? Sharp men can use their knowledge of Scripture and the power of prayer to cut sin out of their lives that would otherwise harm their families. Sharp men are useful to their families.

2) Sharp Men Are Useful to Their Church: Sharp men are not only useful to their families; they are useful to their church. They lead and serve out of obedience to their Good Shepherd – allowing His Word to clarify and sharpen what that obedience looks like. They keep a sharp look out for wolves, and they seek and find those sheep who are lost, sick, or straying. Sharp men are useful to the church.

3) Sharp Men Are Useful to Their Community:
Where strong men of faith live, communities thrive. Statistics have now proven this fact beyond a reasonable doubt. For example, one of the best predictors of poverty and crime is fatherlessness. Christian men who sharpen one another and live out their faith bless not only their families and their churches, but their communities as well.

Men, I look forward to spending time in Bible Study with you in the coming weeks.

Your Pastor and Friend,
John Knox Foster
