Chase Love
“Pursue love.” -1 Corinthians 14:1
1 Corinthians 13 is known as the “love chapter” of the Bible. In it, Paul describes what love “is” – but he defines what love “is” by what love does. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not envy or boast. On and on Paul goes. And then to begin the next chapter – 1 Corinthians 14 – Paul writes, “Pursue love.”
The Greek word for pursue means “to move rapidly and decisively toward an objective.” Pursue is an action word. It reminds us that love is not a quality or character trait that we either have or don’t. Love is something that must be chased after every day.
As Christians, we are to move decisively towards love. But how? Perhaps the easiest way is by remembering how Christ has loved us. Jesus has moved decisively towards us hasn’t he? He left his home on high and came down to live and walk among us. He subjected himself to ridicule, torment, and death on a cross for us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” God loves us. So God pursues us.
The message of 1 Corinthians 14 is fairly simple. Remember what Jesus has done for you – how he has loved you and pursued you? You go and do likewise.
Who is God calling you to love today? Who is he calling you to pursue?
