CPC’s Ministry with The Gardens of Daphne

CPC’s Ministry with The Gardens of Daphne
This is a testimony to the way ministries often begin, as one or more folks listen to God’s tug on their hearts. It is also a picture of how God uses different gifts in the Body of Christ to grow and bless His kingdom in ways we never imagined!

Kathy Gilmore, Mary Platt and Gail Beale all felt a tug on their hearts to reach out in a special way to the residents of The Gardens of Daphne, which is right around the corner from CPC. They received an enthusiastic YES and a blessing to get started…so off they went!

One of our own, Jane Kell works at The Gardens and she was able to get the group connected to the facility and its residents. In fact, Jane is a big part of the ministry because she helps the women to know what’s working and what’s not.  All seventeen of the residents love Jane!

Once a month, Kathy, Gail and Mary provide a monthly activity such as crafts, games, singing, etc. They always share a devotion and scripture when they meet with the residents. They have also started using a prayer box so that the residents can submit prayer requests.

Other ways that CPC has been weaved into this ministry is by Pastor John being willing to be involved and help; Randi Riley asked if the children and youth could send Christmas and birthday cards; even one of our college youth (Dorothy Myers) knitted a couple of lap throws to send to them.

Speaking of lap throws, sometime along the journey, an idea to knit or crochet lap throws came up.  Folks in the church got busy knitting or crocheting!  Even Tampa Sykora’s aunt contributed throws as well as the Yarn Group at Daphne Library (our own Judy Looney was instrumental in getting them involved!)

On Wednesday evening, December 11, 2024 Pastor John will offer a blessing as the lap blankets are ready to be gifted.  They will then be distributed to residents at The Gardens of Daphne at a Christmas party. They will also be given to residents of Faith House in Pensacola which is sponsored by the HER Foundation and provides a home for eleven women veterans.  One of our members will take the blankets and they will be presented at a Daughter of the American Revolution Christmas gathering in Fairhope.

The blankets for The Garden residents will be presented at a Happy Birthday Jesus party where Pastor John will read the biblical Christmas story and our own Wes Johnson and Marvin Schram will sing as our pianist Jan Boyles plays the piano.

What an amazing combination of providence, gifts and blessings that started with God’s tug on a few hearts to move forward and bless these older adults.

May our prayers and support go out with this wonderful ministry and perhaps we will say “yes!” as well when God tugs on our hearts.
